Summary

The threat of disruption to the golden wedding anniversary of a deserving miner provided the theme for a light comedy made in 1972 by director Jaroslav Mach. Grandpa Kubza decides to invite the extended family to the anniversary celebration, including his daughter Anděla who is trying to hide the fact that she is about to get a divorce. And when grandpa disappears and everyone is convinced he has spent the night with flirtatious widow Putifarka, grandma begins to want a divorce too. Everything is eventually explained to everyone’s satisfaction and all the bruised relationships heal… Although the script of this jovial film and Mach’s rather noncommittal directing do not exactly amount to a brilliant foundation, the motion picture still offers a respectable display of good acting. The ageing couple are played by Bohuš Záhorský and Jiřina Šejbalová. They are supported by, for instance, Vladimír Menšík, Radovan Lukavský and Jiří Sovák.

Synopsis

Retired miner Valuš Kobza from a mining village of Kamenice has been preparing a great party: he is going to celebrate golden wedding with his wife Christine. Grandma Kobzová wants to look superb for this occasion. She wants to look good because all the family is coming, including the Prague branch of the family, her daughter Anděla, her son-in-law Jarda and their children Olga and Honzík. Anděla is about to get divorced, but Jarda promised to play the role of a happy husband because of her parents. Olga does not like the comedy and refuses to go to Kamenice. The day before the wedding grandpa Kubza with his son Tony go to pub to have a "stag party". In the morning, the family finds Tony in a wrecked car, but they cannot find the grandpa. Both sons-in-law keep searching for him across the village. Olga eventually decides to come to the wedding, but she wants to come secretly. When a tractor driver Ferda helps her in crossing a brook, they both fall to cold water. Olga's wet clothes on the washing line get stolen by Ferda's friends. Ferda takes Olga to the town to buy new clothes, but they got caught by a overzealous policeman. Nobody can find grandpa Kubza. They think that he had spent the night at a flirtatious widow Putifarka. Grandma Kubzová wants to get divorced instead of celebrating the golden wedding. Eventually, grandpa Kubza is found asleep in the forest. The golden wedding can start. Even Olga and Ferda make it to the wedding. Anděla reconciles with Jarda, Putifarka flirts with a bachelor Kubza's son Oldřich. And grandpa Kubza with his beloved wife Christine look forward to their diamond wedding.
