Summary

Discord between neighbouring households that spills over into open warfare was the theme of this 1976 comedy from Petr Schulhoff. Working from his own script, the veteran director created a recreational film about members of two slightly odd households: the Nováks and the Bartáčeks. A rumour picked up by jealous Alena Bartáčková soon snowballs into a gloves-off battle. The conflict rages on even after both families are moved out of their old flats, about to be demolished to make room for the construction of the metro. The families are rehoused in new flats on an estate, again in close proximity to one another. Several elite actors appear as members of the two quarrelling families, including Miloš Kopecký, Iva Janžurová and Stella Zázvorková. The up-and-coming generation of actors is represented by Dagmar Veškrnová and Luděk Sobota. A sequel loosely based on the film was made in 1986: Co je doma, to se počítá, pánové… (What I Have I Hold, Gentlemen...!).

Synopsis

In an old courtyard gallery house there are two neighbouring apartments. One of them belongs to Alena and Kája Bartáček, a childless couple; the other is occupied by an elderly couple Božena and Evžen Novák, who have a grown up son René. Novák, a disability pensioner makes side money as a movie supernumerary, but he calls himself an artist. René boasts with non-existing academic titles before his girlfriends, hiding his real job of a taxi-driver. Alena is a housewife, who is extremely jealous of her Kája. She quickly gets hot-tempered when Novák tells her about Kája's alleged date at a tram stop. Bartáček gets furious because of his wife's investigation. He decides to settle the bills with Novák, since he cannot afford being gossiped as a recognized company chief executive. A home war arises, in which both the families enjoy being spiteful to each other. However, the house will shortly be pulled down because of the metro construction, and its tenants get substitute apartments in a new housing estate. The Nováks' are pleased to get rid of the Bartáčeks', but at their surprise, the families are allocated neighbouring apartments. Ms Nováková gets a new job - a cleaning lady at a large company, where she soon meets the company stock man - a "chief executive" Bartáček. The war between the two families gets calmer, but not for long. Meanwhile, René met Alena's niece Naďa who moved to Prague. The young people decide to conciliate the families by invitation to their wedding, however, a fake one. The happiness of both couples shortly turns into a wild quarrel...
