Landowner Sýkora comes to Prague to see his son who has boasted about his artistic success in his letters. In fact, Jan does not work and wastes the money his father gives him with his mates. His one real friend, however, is baron Vilém Vožický whose sister Kajetána he loves. The capricious woman only teases the men. Lenka Vejvodová, the daughter of his housekeeper, is quietly and genuinely in love with Jan. When father and son meet, Jan is ashamed of the old countryman and asks him to leave. Jan's father is greatly hurt and gives him a good slap before he departs. Jan loses his source of money and the "mates" abandon him. Vilém decides with his friend, the philosophising rag-and-bone man Podhajský, to look after Jan. Jan's father has renounced him and so there is nothing the young man can do but to accept shelter with Podhajský. He begins painting again and is successful. His friendship with Lenka looks promising but then Kajetána decides to make her move. After a while the pair have an argument. Jan leaves and catches a bad chill in a storm. He is saved from serious illness by the loving care of Lenka, who has forgiven him, like his father.
This theme had already been treated in a Czech film under the same title (Dir: Přemysl Pražský, 1926).
