Synopsis

The young and beautiful Clo begins a career on the stage in spite of the opposition of her respectable Prague parents. She soon finds an opening as a solo ballerina in Dresden. She is happy in her private life too because she is in love with the ballet corps leader Sasha, who returns her feelings. Following a big success she gets an offer from Brussels. Sasha cannot bear the thought of separation and shoots himself. With Sasha dead, Clo finds out she is pregnant. At her wits' end, she writes to her sister Marie, a talented pianist, for help. Marie helps Clo selflessly by bringing her baby girl back to Prague and bringing it up as her own. As an unmarried mother Marie loses her family's respect, loses the affection of the man she loves and gives up her own career. Clo meanwhile continues successfully in her career. She lives a high life not lacking in love, fame and the admiration of men. It is only when she starts feeling her age that she longs again for her child. But then for the first time the quiet Marie rebels. Clo has to leave the child with Marie. Unhappily, Clo returns to her former life.
