The Last ShotSynopsis
The last days of the Second World War in the Vítkovice ironworks. The fanatical Germans are still considering an increase in production while the Czechs, led by Communist party member Halfar and engineer Hejnych, try to slow it down. Halfar's furnace is hit during one of the numerous air raids. The workers are glad that the furnace will no longer work for the Germans and they go home. Halfar and Hejnych are the only ones thinking of the future and they start to repair it. Among the workers rushing off home from the factory is the slag-worker Kuča whose wife is pregnant in their home in a nearby village. When he discovers, however, that the Germans intend to blow up the high furnaces, he runs back immediately to warn his companions. The workers are thus able to prevent the destruction of the furnaces. The front is approaching the town, the Germans are fleeing and soon the inhabitants of Vítkovice are able to welcome the Red Army. Halfar immediately puts together a group of men to repair the damaged furnace. The young electrician Ludvíček is glad to do his share. He is, however, killed by the last shot fired by hidden German soldiers.
