Synopsis

At the request of the headmistress, Borůvka's adolescent daughter Zuzanka invites her father the criminologist to the girls' school where she is studying. The headmistress is scrupulously concerned with the reputation of her school and asks Borůvka to privately investigate the theft of fifteen hundred crowns from the physics cabinet. It seems there was a fight in the room - Borůvka discovers bloody footprints on the floor and also a torn-off lady's stocking-suspender. It turns out that the feared professor of math, Kotě, has disappeared. He did not arrive at Pardubice to visit his sick sister, where he was called for by a telegram found in the cabinet. To the great surprise of the staff of professors, questioning reveals much from the secret lives of the female students. Six of them founded a club for destroying Kotě and, by sending anonymous letters and planting lingerie on him, they discredited the Professor to his jealous wife. The alibis of some of the girls are supported by their lovers and one of the students even has twins she delivered during the summer holidays. Kotě, who confused two trains and left in the opposite direction by mistake, eventually appears at school, healthy and alive, even with the reportedly stolen money. Borůvka, too, has a big surprise - his Zuzanka has a secret affair with young Professor Lavecký and has to marry him. - Borůvka wakes up from his dream and is glad that nothing of it was true. However, at that moment Zuzanka comes to see him, asking him to come to school at the request of the headmistress.

Note

The short story How a Woman Bathes, first published in a magazine, came out later in book form under the title Scientific Method in the collection The Sadness of Lieutenant Borůvka in the Smaragd edition of the Mladá fronta publishing house.
