Man in Labour

Synopsis

Anna, the wife of a postman from a Giant Mountains village is brought by an ambulance car to the maternal hospital for the third time. Lojza Panáček believes that after two daughters he will get a son. The eight year old exemplary pupil Andulka goes to school and the shop-assistant Erika takes care of the little Maruška. Lojza sets out for his usual round, under which he brings besides mails also ordered food to older people living up the mountains. The small Libor, a son of holiday makers from Prague walks often with him. Lojza teaches him to ski, he does not laugh at his lack of skill as his father, who often punishes Libor for minor knaveries too hard. This time the postman refuses Libor's company. Already at the ski lift Lojza learns he has a third daughter. Libor wants to tell him the news too and he sets off uphill despite of the bad weather. In the sharp wind he almost falls in the huge gorge. Lojza finds him fortunately, but they have to find an emergency shelter in the sudden snowstorm. They eat the food which Lojza did not manage to deliver. Libor's desperate parents call urgently the Mountain Rescue Service, but they cannot find anybody. At night Libor disappears from the shelter. He is afraid his father will punish him therefore he set off home in the dark and in the snowstorm. Fortunately Panáček found him ice cold in the snow-drift not far off. In the morning the sky is clear again and the members of the Mountain Rescue Service find both missing persons soon. Libor is quickly brought to a doctor. Only the fed up Lojza complains bitterly to his friend- why doesn't he also have such a boy?
