Synopsis

It has been two years and a village woman vainly waits for the return of her son, Giovanni, who is somewhere in the war far away. Her little daughter Claudie does not really remember her brother, the only reminder of him being the empty plate always set on the table. But as soon as the mother decides not to include Giovanni’s plate, the young soldier appears at the door. He is very pale and his behaviour is awkwardly indifferent. The mother spots a silhouette of yet another soldier behind the window, but Giovanni does not want to invite him in. The son moreover rejects the offered food and leaves the house in no time. The mother tries to stop him, but the son’s coat falls to the ground and only traces of blood are left in the snow after the departing figures. The desperate mother knows now that it was her dead son only coming to say good bye to her.
