Synopsis

Forester Kořán lives in the woods of Šumava forest with only his aged housekeeper. He feels very lonely, and therefore he requests his superior to assign him an adjunct and allow him to go get married. His request is granted and the new adjunct, Svijanský, comes to the forest district after Kořán's departure to find a bride. The adjunct soon meets gamekeeper Vavruch and his daughter Katy. Vavruch is threatened with losing his position because he is unable to protect the forest from Bavarian poachers who secretly pass over the border. One poacher, Luizl, is in love with Katy and he begins to be bitterly jealous of the young adjunct, and he even beats him. Kořán returns in the meantime with his wife. The young Mrs. Kořán is soon dissatisfied with the difficult life in the solitude of the forest and recalls the good times in Budějovice. One sad evening, in a moment of weakness, she succumbs to the wooings of the adjunct. In the morning, desperate from her fall, she confesses everything to the old servant. The wise woman comforts her with the prospect that from all things bad it is possible to change things for the better. Luizl settles down, begins to farm, and takes Katy as his wife.

Note

One of the main actresses, Emilie Sedláčková, died in the course of the filming and the screenplay had to be rewritten. The result was different from the original story.

The copy was put together by Miroslav J. Krňanský in 19534 from the surviving incomplete original copies. The original negative was destroyed during the Second World War. The film has a different appearance than the original version.
