The young actor František Lukavec experienced two joyful events in one day: he lived to see his first son born and was offered the role of the communist hero from the resistance Julius Fučík in a leading Prague theatre. The annoying thing is that he is to act with his former professor Tůma with whom he had a major conflict years ago. Also the situation at home gets complicated: after his wife's return from the maternity hospital, František does not have the proper conditions to study his role. In a club, the young man meets the worldly actress Müllerová who introduces him to influential people. František then begins to appear on TV, on radio and in film. Although all this contributes to his popularity, it prevents him from concentrated work in the theatre. Both his moral and artistic crisis affect his theatre colleagues as well as his wife. The revengeful Tůma provokes him; he even refuses to act with him. His wife takes the child and leaves for her mother's. At a communist meeting, František comes to realize what is the most important to him. During the dress rehearsal, Tůma fails to control himself, and in the role of the commissar Böhm, he slaps the young actor in the face. František succeeds to suppress the humiliation and acts to the end as if nothing happened. His moral victory is witnessed also by his wife who came in secret to watch František. And in a while, the rehearsal continues...
