The Plain Old Maid

The middle-aged accountant inspector Hana Kalvodová has to make an audit in the Záře publishing house where there has been a embezzlement. Editor Jiří Štefl introduces her to the core of the problem. Karel Čírkovský, who was collecting subscription money, cheated the company by taking half of that money for himself. When he realized that his fraud was going to be revealed he escaped abroad. Štefl likes Hana and after a few days an emotional relationship grows between them. The strict woman starts looking younger and more beautiful. Čírkovský's mother wants to pay back the money for her son but the amount proves much bigger than the old lady thought it was. Hana keeps going through the bills and receipts and finally reaches a sad conclusion. Čírkovský really only stole a small sum. After his escape, manager Hronek continued misappropriating the funds with Jiří Štefl's help. Jiří got himself into debt and difficulties after his wife's tragic death. Hronek helped him then and thus obliged Jiří to keep silent about everything. Jiří doesn't want to go to jail, because he really loves Hana. However, Hana couldn't live with the feeling of complicity in their crime. She promises Jiří that she will wait for him while he serves his sentence.
