Synopsis

Coachman Lojza Zacpal likes to make up rascally tricks to annoy his older fellow-villagers. The frivolous young man also likes to flirt with girls without really falling in love with them. But Lojza's life is not easy. His mother is gravely ill and his father, a blacksmith, left them for good to live with his lover, widow Jeřábková, after a fight with Lojza. His mother dies soon after and Lojza starts looking after the household and his younger brothers and sisters. Student Stanin comes to the village for a holiday. Good looking accountant Eva Kuncová starts working in the cooperative. Lojza has financial difficulties but still defiant refuses help. Eva and Lojza have a fight and the offended young woman accepts the superficial Stanin's courtship. Lojza clashes with his father during the potato gathering and the cooperative members stand by the young man. The old Zacpal decides to leave the village for good. Lojza is avoiding Eva although it is obvious that he is in love with her. Eva refuses to become Stanin's lover. In the spring, during the building of a maypole, she has a chance to show Lojza that she shares his feelings.
