After the farmer's death, his son Jakub cultivates his fields. When his younger brother Josífek comes of age, he takes over part of the fields. The fields are neglected and Josífek leaves them and goes to look for a living in Prague. On the way, he learns that by fertilizing the fields with calcium nitrate, the yield can be significantly increased. He seeks out an agricultural advisory center, where he receives information about the use of artificial fertilizers, returns home and begins to diligently cultivate the inherited fields. He fertilizes with calcium nitrate and the fields bring him a very rich harvest. His older brother Jakub, seeing the result of Josífek's work, begins to farm with him.
