Synopsis

The baker's assistant František is lying dead in a coffin on the baker's premises. The avaricious miller is not ashamed to rifle through his things and he steals a bag of money. He announces to Marhoul the baker that he will not be taking on a new assistant. The baker, until now a silent and appeasing man, suddenly comes out of himself and accuses the miller of miserliness and bad conduct. He then decides to leave the mill, even though the servant Josefína warns him of his uncertain future.
