A family is moving from their village house. Ján decided to sell the house and move to the town with his family. His student son is partly helping to loading the car and partly paying attention to a loudly laughing blonde – his girlfriend and classmate Elena. The mother has finished cooking and calls everybody to the table. Ján’s father, an old man who spent his entire life in the house, feels offended and refuses to eat, answering everybody only out of the side of his mouth. He is convinced that the family should not have kept the house sale secret from him and that there was no reason to rush with it. He feels that he is in his declining years and does not want to be forcifully uprooted. He leaves his plate of food untouched and sits on a bench in the orchard behind the house. He recollects the arrival of the purchaser a month ago. Ján tried to camouflage the purpose of the man’s visit but his father did not let himself be hoodwinked. The buyer felt embarrassed about the situation, but Ján only swept his hand over his father’s objections. A neighbour, Milan, offers the old man a cigarette and the young couple who have come to the orchard take one, too. The old man’s sadness is laughable for the student, and he and Elena soon run away. Milan’s comforting does not help the old man, either. As soon as everything is loaded and the young people leave on a motorcycle, Ján goes to pick up his father. It seems he fell asleep on the bench. The son tries to wake up the old man, but his body only lifelessly slides off it.
