The policeman Václav Pilát remembers the time five years ago, when he was assigned to work in the mountain region. As a newcomer, he had to slowly win the trust of the local people. He inquired into petty thefts, stopped children from hurting themselves with unexploded army ammunition they'd found. But then, someone informed him that a certain amount of methyl alcohol was stolen from a closed carriage. This was already a serious case, as the substance is very poisonous. It was confirmed that the crime was committed by a local person, because one of the inhabitants died from consuming that alcohol - a local notorious alcoholic. Pilát was following the clues carefully, together with his colleagues, the other policemen. When he finally got hold of the thief, and prevented a mass poisoning, he truly won the trust of his community.
