Libretto to the opera by the German composer Carl Orff was created in 1937 and was based on a collection of 11th-13th century folk poetry titled Carmina Burana, which was found in the Benediktbeuern Monastery in Bavaria in 1803. The composer set to music twenty-five of the original two hundred and fifty-four parts of the romantic and comic verses written in primitive medieval Latin, German and French. Director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle adapted the work into a cinematographic and television form in a West German-Czechoslovak co-production on the occasion of author's eightieth birthday.
Synopsis
The opening of the opera celebrates the fickle Fortune. The first part is devoted to the celebration of nature and spring, the second to the wine and the third to love. The ending is again a tribute to the glory of the almighty Fortune.
Note
The film was released in the cinemas in the original language version without Czech subtitles.
