Synopsis

An old childless couple watch in sadness as children make a snowman beneath their window. During the night the snowman changes into a girl who enters their house. The couple accept her as their daughter and give her the name Ruzenka. At Christmas time Ruzenka is cutting up an apple. The core of the apple has the form of a cross. With the coming of spring, Ruzenka wastes away but during the festivities celebrating the spring - with the burning of the witches - she dances with her young friends around the fire. When the girl tries to jump over the flames, she melts away.
