Fifth-grader Jirka Záruba is unruly, he does not do his homework properly and, because of him, his class loses the competition to collect the most waste paper. The children are angry with him. The teacher, however, advises them as pioneers to take their fellow pupil under their wing. Jirka is made aware of his mistakes, particularly when his mother falls ill and he realizes how much work she has with both him and his brothers and sisters. He covers his books, helps his mother with the housework and is eager to study with his classmates. He finally becomes an exemplary pioneer.
