It's April 1945 and the war is nearly over. Fearing the Germans, the village people hide in an old cave. The landlord and his wife have food hidden in their rucksacks which they eat in secret because they don't want to share it with the others. They hide the bread-loaf from their servant girl, even though she is suffering from hunger along with the other villagers. The landlord's wife claims that they have no food left and the landlord even sends the servant girl out to bring them some water. In the fight that follows, a peasant family takes the girl's side. The landowner is ashamed and orders his greedy wife to give bread to everybody. However, it is now too late, for the people have already left.
