Today is Marie Nová's fiftieth birthday. First she is reminded of it by one of her subordinate colleagues in a stud she manages. Sláma would like to become a foal raising manager and so he talks disrespectly about František Syrový who ought to leave this position and retire. According to Sláma he is behind the times. Marie became a widow three years ago and František is closer to her than she wants to admit even to herself. Two Marie's sons are married and have their own lives. Her daughter Kateřina is coming from Prague together with her fiancé Péťa to wish happy birthday. Kateřina is pregnant and supposes that her mother will take care of her housing. Kateřina's father was a very active resistance fighter and later in public affairs, and so his widow Nová would get as an appreciation a flat in Prague. However, Marie disagrees. She gave her children as much as she could and she wants to live her own life and devote her time to her work which is a hobby for her. These two tactless congratulations caused her distemper, which is finally released to her true friend František. Marie takes bunch of carnations from him and sends him away.
