Four scary tales from old Prague inspired this anthology film created in 1968 by a trio of prominent directors: Miloš Makovec, Jiří Brdečka and Evald Schorm. A visually captivating narrative with humorous hyperbole first encapsulates the musical tale Fabricius a Zuzana (Robick a Zuzana) [Fabricius and Zuzana (Robick and Zuzana)], directed by Makovec, in which a handsome stranger (Miloš Kopecký) listens to stories told by an esoteric beauty (Milena Dvorská). In the course of a single night, the curious stranger is treated to a story about the Jewish animated anthropomorphic being, the Golem (Brdečka’s Poslední golem – The Last Golem) and a tale about a unique pair of shoes ordered by a spoilt noblewoman at a time of famine (Schorm’s Chlebové střevíčky – Party Shoes Made of Bread, which is reminiscent of a Faust story). The last tale (Makovec’s Otrávená travička – Poisoned Poisoner) links back to the Fabricius a Zuzana framing story; it transpires that Zuzana is a murderess whose spell can only be broken by a kiss arising from true love.
Four short stories.
