The story of Prague conservationist Mr. Pear, a timorous clerk impedimental in the world of his attractive wife and ambitious daughter. He escapes in his thoughts from the everyday paperwork, bureaucracy and useless discussions to the Napoleonic age, and transforms himself into a gallant marshal. And then one day he manages to be a hero in real life and possibly escapes once and for all.
