Majka didn't make it to fine art school and is for the moment selling hot dogs at the fast-food bar. She is staying with her married sister Jana and is a little in the way there. One of her customers, a nice doctor called Volráb, is courting Majka and invites her over to his place. He lives in a luxurious flat but the paintings on the walls, some of them gifts from patients who are artists, have been chosen according to their price rather than quality. Majka falls in love with Volráb and decides that her future lies with him, but he has concealed from her the existence of his wife Helena, who refuses to divorce him and even plans to join him on his journey to Greece, where the doctor intends to go to and work for three years. Majka meets Tomáš a film directoring student and lets him stay over in her room after a drinking party. The young man starts to grow fond of her but Jana warns him that Majka is going to marry a doctor and is intending to go abroad with him. Majka, however, is soon to be deeply disappointed. Helena's threats and emotional blackmail have managed to sway her husband. And with his planned journey likely to bring him considerable material gain, he drily dumps Majka. A sculptor, Majka's friend, is mixing plaster in his studio. His wife is hanging out the nappies. Majka observes them through a keyhole with a smile.
