Summary

Evald Schorm's film Legacy is a look back at the heritage of ancient Greece, its culture and art, which is recalled not only by surviving monuments but also by written texts. Views of ancient sites alternate with shots of modern Greece, especially Athens, which is presented as a bustling city and a place of quiet streets and traditional ways of life. The images are accompanied by a commentary reflecting on democracy, compiled from the thoughts of ancient poets.

Synopsis

A Czechoslovakian Airlines plane takes off from the airport to land in Athens, the cradle of democracy and a place of ancient sights as well as a modern bustling city. Greek monuments such as the Oden Amphitheatre, the Temple of Hephaestion, the Athenian Agora, the Dipylon Cemetery, the Acropolis, and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi alternate with the buildings of modern Athens. Locals, street vendors and tourists mingle in their hectic streets. The city presents markets, stalls, busy traffic, quiet streets, and a coastline with fishermen.

Note

The film uses ancient texts by the poets Solon, Theognis, Fein Alcaeus, Euripides, Paulus Silentarius and Semonides. The short film was released in distribution as an opener to the Spanish drama Holidays with Ivette.
