Synopsis

Krista, the daughter of landowner Bartoš, and his ward Heda, are extremely mischievous. They play tricks mostly on their tutor. The valet, who was supposed to announce Bartoš's return from his travels, gets drunk so the latter arrives home to find everything in disarray. Bartoš tells Krista that lieutenant Hugo Petrovický has asked for her hand in marriage. Bartoš is accompanied by the councillor's wife Pelegrinová and her daughter Melanie who the takes a fancy to tutor . The priest and Hugo's uncle arrive at the estate to celebrate Krista and Hugo's wedding. The tutor writes Melanie a letter. Krista and Heda secretly add a few words to the letter. The eve before the wedding Hugo and Krista promise fidelity to each other since Hugo must leave immediately after the wedding to go off for a year's travelling with his uncle.
