Jan, who works in the forest as a valuer of round wood, is on his way home. He is playing in the garden with his wife and children in front of the house which he had bought as part of a mortgage system. He refuses an offer of insurance. One day towards evening, he falls down on his way home from work. His wife Julinka and the gamekeeper go out to look for him. They find him lying wounded in the snow. Jan is badly wounded, he is dying as he says farewell to his children. After the funeral the court confiscates all the family's property ? A doctor stands at Jan's bedside and tells him that he has overcome the worst. Jan gets up: his terrible feverish dream about death has been a warning to him. When he is tidying up the house he finds the letter from the insurance office with the offer that he had so blithely rejected before.
