A teacher tells the school children a story about a poet who wants to write a song for the pioneers. His work does not go well, however, he has caught a cold, he is tired and decides to go to bed. The letters from the poet's typewriter come to life and are acted by the pupils. Some of the animated letters move around among the large objects on the poet's desk, trying to put together the text for the new song. A fat boy, the letter O, is lazy, however, and refuses to cooperate. The others try to continue without him but the word "pioneer" cannot be written without him. In his carelessness, the lethargic boy falls from the table into the waste paper bin. The other letters help him overcome his difficulties and he is thus glad to rejoin his friends. Together the letters form a song which the pioneers then perform.
