QuietlySynopsis
A young pointsman pulls the absentmindedly smiling Mr Šťastný away from the rails just before a train rushes by. The old man is a former railwayman and has been almost deaf for as long as twenty years. He lives alone and only sometimes receives a letter from his son living in the United States with his family. The old man is happy in a pub with a group of regulars and, on his way home, he is not disturbed even by the loud swearing of the concierge. Then, he receives a package – his son has sent him a modern earpiece which strongly amplifies sound. Mr Šťastný can hear the radio and various sounds again. In the pub, his friend boasts about his countless love affairs with women who used to call him my sweetie. But Šťastný corrects him – he never had any other woman except his wife. The friend is offended and also the surprised barflies are not happy about it; they wanted to listen to the philanderer’s stories, even if they are made up. They leave the table for the counter and Šťastný is left alone. He can now hear the concierge’s tongue-lashing on the way home and morosely palms her off. He then sadly meditates at home. The young pointsman spots the old man on the rails once more. He sets off to save him again but this time, Šťastný knows well what he is doing. The passing train just crushes the earpiece to smithereens.
Note
The film was a reality excercise of the film faculty's 3rd grade, discipline film direction.
