Summary

The main character in the case of August Habermann was the miller of Bludov, a village in northern Moravia. The fact that the life of an affluent businessman practically turned into a Greek tragedy was caused by the time and place that he lived in – in the borderland of first-republic Czechoslovakia at the end of the 1930s. Habermann was a German with normal relations with his Czech neighbours and was even close friends with some of them. He spoke Czech well, even with members of his own family. His wife was Czech and he himself helped some Czechs during the war. After the liberation of the Czech lands he mysteriously disappeared. It became apparent that in May 1945 he was brutally murdered. The crime was never cleared up, those guilty were never punished and his wife and their children were expelled.
