Marie is disillusioned with her marriage. Her husband Arthur is never at home, constantly going out to parties. On his way to see a former lover, Arthur is injured in a train accident. He loses his memory and, when his documents are exchanged, he is considered dead. Konstantin, who is courting Marie for her wealth, seizes the opportunity and marries her. Arthur finds his way to a gamekeeper's lodge and is mistaken for the lost husband of the gamekeeper's daughter, Rosa Mathisová. Arthur finally settles into the lodge and Rosa bears him a son. During a fight with Rosa's former lover Ondřej, Arthur is hit on the head and his memory returns. His true identity is also confirmed by the courts. Konstantin doesn't want to give Marie up so that he doesn't lose out financially. Arthur therefore pays him off and he also employs Rosa and her real husband Mathis, who has returned from his wanderings, on his estate. Finally Marie and he decide to adopt the boy.
The film contains clever use of double special effects. For a long time the film was considered lost. In 1992 it was acquired from the collection at George Eastman House in Rochester where it had been stored under the title "Count Jaromir from Kolourat." The English-Czech intertitles and the introductory titles include different names of characters from those contained in the Czech descripiton of the film at the time it was made (in this case the differing roles are given after a dash).
