Synopsis

The pupil of the sixth class of the gymnasium Eva Martenová falls in love with the new young teacher Jiří Hron. She can never concentrate in his lessons even though she is always very well prepared. On a school outing the school-teacher Mrs Bruncvíková tries to win the attentions of the new teacher but all evening he dances with Eva. Back at school Eva's thoughts are elsewhere and she refuses to give Mrs Bruncvíková Hron's portrait. She goes into Hron's office in tears and he tries to comfort her. But his gesture of friendship is observed by fellow teacher Bernard who already has reservations about Hron's modern teaching methods. He tells the school principal he saw Hron embracing the pupil Martenová. When Eva finds out that Hron might be disciplined because of her, she tries to kill herself. But her friend's brother Dr Pavel Haler saves her. Hron, who has been acknowledged as having behaved correctly, visits Eva in hospital and confesses he loves her.
