The thirty-year old Tonička works in the mine at the tipping machine. She suffers from a complex because she was born with venual malformations, colloquially called a port-wine stain, on her chest and neck. She lives with her married sister and lovingly cares for her two children. At a party, the quite handsome but eternally drunk miner Franta Placák notices Tonička. They spend the night together. Tonička falls in love with him and begins to look him up. Franta sleeps with her, but he does not acknowledge her when sober; once, when drunk in his one-room flat, he even offers her to his companion Lojza. Tonička runs away and publicly slaps him across the face the next day. She finds herself pregnant and fears that the child might inherit her handicap. A doctor talks her out of her worries. Franta coarsely refuses to take care of the mother of his future offspring. Tonička finds care and a home with Miška Preslová who herself cannot have children. Placák, who begins to creep into her favour out of the blue, is refused although he promises to go for anti-alcoholic therapy. Tonička delivers a healthy boy after some time and leaves with him to the countryside to her brother's where she is promised a job in the local gardening centre after her maternity leave.
