Summary

Karel Smyczek launched his highly successful directing career with Housata (Goslings), a feature film made according to Irena Charvátová's screenplay. The main protagonists of the tragicomic narrative in this 1979 release are girls resident in a boarding house attached to a college for textiles apprentices. Similarly to Forman’s Lásky jedné plavovlásky (Loves of a Blonde, 1965), the female leads in Goslings – sensitive Marie, self-confident Monika and diffident Šárka – also struggle with issues surrounding their first romantic relationships. Marie falls in love with private Oto, to whom she has been writing letters on behalf of stylistically inept Monika. When it comes to light, Marie is shunned by everybody… This is a distinctive film that references the poetic character of 1960s Czechoslovak cinema, with its credible situations and dialogues, as well as its captivating cast. The casting in fact provided opportunities for numerous young performers (Yvetta Kornová, Veronika Gajerová, Jaromíra Mílová and Jaromír Dulava).

Synopsis

Marie, Monika, Šárka, Blanka, Renata, these are just few names of the girls who stay at a boarding-house of the textile vocational school. Each of the girls is different, each has her own fate. The serious and sensitive Marie shares a room with Šárka, a girl from a childern's home and superficial Monika, who is confident due to her provocative beauty and a rich family background. Monika in comparison to other girls has always a boy-friend and still she keeps some in reserve. One of them is lance-corporal Ota from an ad. But Monika cannot write interesting letters, Marie is writing them instead of her. Ota and Marie get to understand each other in the letters and the girl falls in love with the private on a distance. But during the first Ota's visit Monika likes the soldier and so she strives to cover successfully that the nice letters were written by somebody else. Marie is sad and decides to write Ota the truth. The impulsive Šárka, who is personally happy because she is usually invited for weekends in the family of the instructor Marková, reveals Marie's action unintetionally. The conceited Monika breaks the agreed date of Ota and Marie and she wins the shy and indecisive boy again for herself. On top of that she tells all to the other girls who turn away from Marie. Šárka tries to help her in vain. The unhappy Marie stays alone and she has to get over it alone as well.
