Synopsis

It is the 1950s. A bus packed with city members of the Czechoslovak Socialist Youth Movement is leaving for the village of Sklepovice. They are welcomed by their good-humoured head before the departure. On the way, the bus driver picks up a hitchhiking hiker who appears to have come straight out of the film The Magnificent Seven. The holiday workers are expected by everybody in the village and they are illustratively introduced to their work. A young local teacher is loved and admired by the tractor-driver Pavel but the girl cannot resist her sudden passionate and tender affection for the hiker. The summer workers harvest fruit, cabbage and beet; they also milk and mow. Only the tramp lazily sits by his small bonfire. The teacher reproaches him, claiming that we will not build a new world just by wandering and dreaming. The cooperative members organize a hop linked with a pork feast to say farewell to the summer workers. The hop is also attended by the tramp and the jealous tractor-driver. Both the cooperative chairman and the head of the working group vainly try to prevent a conflict. Everything eventually develops into a big fight between the cooperative members and the Young Socialists who jointly succeed in turning the pub into a pile of ruins. In the morning, everybody who participated in the accident sincerely laughs at it. Even the tramp and the tractor-driver part as friends. The tramp leaves with the Youth Movement members. He, however, gets off the bus as soon as it hits the horizon and returns to the mesmerized teacher, himself clad in the Youth Movement's blue shirt. Hand in hand, they walk towards the sun and a better future.
