Summary

A film based on the novel by Czech writer Vladislav Vančura. Shortly after Czechoslovakia is created the dandy Tomáš, son of a Slovak landowner, comes to Prague to study law. He gets to know the eccentric Jana, who has a hard time tolerating her bourgeois family. Their lives connect in escaping to Budapest. Later the two lovers take refuge in Slovakia, at Tomáš's father's farm. After the wedding, Jana begins to lose her feelings for Tomáš and instead finds a spiritual kinship with her father-in-law. The family leaves the deteriorating farm to stay with a cousin in Vienna - the owner of an entertainment bar. Only a return to Prague gives them new hope...
