Summary

Two critical eras in the history of a Czech village serve as inspiration for Karel Steklý’s 1975 politically engaged feature. Twice, the idyllic village Údolná serves as a stage for a group of honest communists, who triumph over the old order and open up the path towards a bright socialist future for the villagers. The first occasion is during the “collectivisation” era of the 1950s. The second time is in 1968, when subversive rightist elements seek to overthrow the honest cooperative members. The protagonist of the feature – conforming to the ideological demands of storytelling during the era of “normalisation” – is retired glassworker Štěpán Urban, who becomes the founder and first chairman of the local agricultural cooperative. Jiří Krampol excels in the leading role. Josef Vinklář, Miloš Willig and Jan Skopeček also appear.

Synopsis

The District Committee of the Communist Party sends a glass-blower Štěpán Urban to the village of Údolná to establish a co-op farm. It is not an easy task; farmers do not trust Štěpán and some of them even hate him. Karel Zavadil, a brother of Štěpán's girlfriend Lenka, even attacks him and gets arrested. However, Štěpán does not get scared and the village calms finally down. He succeeds in establishing of the co-op farm and at his wedding with Karel's sister he makes up with Karel who has been just released from prison. The time passes and the co-op farm led by Štěpán flourishes. The year of 1968, however, brings unexpected problems, the so-called right-wing wins at the Party meeting and the District Communist Party Committee Secretary Brabec is withdrawn. The atmosphere of distrust causes his death. At his funeral disgusted Štěpán returns his party membership-card, however, when he understands it is not an acceptable behaviour, he takes it back. The harvest is approaching; the co-op farm needs to get its farm machines repaired. The new warehouse manager pretends that there are no spare parts. Karel Zavadil finds out that it's not true and together with young co-op members they take the spare parts from the warehouse. Štěpán immediately sends money to the bank. The district newspapers slander Štěpán for that but Štěpán is not afraid as the main thing - the harvest - is assured.

Note

At the beginning and the end of the film you can hear the poem If I Were Mere Grass written by Miroslav Florian.
