Summary

Director Karel Steklý added this motion picture to the list of retrospective films made in the post-1968 “normalisation” era that criticise “abhorrent” practices of interwar politics. The film’s protagonists are two veterans of the Great War. While Jan (Jiří Krampol) finds a job as an electrician after the conflict, Ríša (Petr Svojtka) becomes an editor of the social democratic newspaper Právo lidu (People’s Rights). That lets him get close to the amorality of party dignitaries. Among them is Senator Koubek (Zdeněk Buchvaldek), who withdraws from public life following the scandal cited in the film title. However, he takes part in a clandestine meeting of social democratic MPs who decide to desert their voters and, following incitement from prime minister Vlastimil Tusar, resign from their posts… The slanted film presents the events of 1920 as a moral victory of the social democratic party’s left wing, which later gave rise to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.

Synopsis

Among soldiers coming back from the World War I are also two friends, Ríša Racek and Jan Zámostný. Jan gets soon a job as an electrician but Ríša has a more difficult situation. He had joined up directly from school and now it is difficult for him to find a job. Thanks to the connections of his father's client - the chairman of the social - democratic party he gets a job in the editor's office of the daily Právo lidu in the end. Here he lernts the background of politics and party officers. One of them is the senator Koubek who has to explain at various meetings why his party does not fulfil the demands of its members. After a scandal in the Gri - Gri night club where Koubek met a German emigrant Inge, he effaces. But he takes part again in a secret meeting of the social democratic MPs. The meeting was summoned by the premier Tusar to face up the critics of the rank and file. The ministers come here to an important decision. They will resign and make a free seat in the caretaker government in order not to fulfil the wishes of the membership. The honest party members are surprised by the clear betrayal. Ríša's father even faints after he learns about the news. Ríša learnt from this even that his only chance as a journalist is to have good relations with "those top people". His friend Jan reminds him though that the most important thing is not to betray oneself.
