Following the success of 1952’s Dovolená s Andělem (Holiday with Angel), director Bořivoj Zeman returned to the character of the curmudgeonly ticket inspector Gustav Anděl with this loose 1955 sequel. While in the first film, the protagonist travelled to a summer trade union camp, in Anděl na horách (Angel in the Mountains) the character visits the summertime High Tatra Mountains. However, this time Mr. Anděl – reflecting the post-Stalin-era slight loosening of political repressions – focuses more on personal problems than social ones related to “building a better future”. For the inspector’s son has become engaged to a certain Věra, and the conservative father wants to see if the young woman measures up. However, Anděl mistakenly confuses the pleasant young future bride with a woman of far looser morals. Jaroslav Marvan excels in the lead role in this popular comedy, once again superbly supported by Josef Kemr in the role of cellist Vyhlídka. Though this represented one of the most successful Czechoslovak films of the 1950s, a planned second sequel, in which Anděl was to visit the seaside, was unfortunately never produced.
Three young employees of Spofana Company, Zdeněk Soukup, his girlfriend Věra Novotná and their friend Věra Matoušková were rewarded for excellent work by a vacation in the mountain resort of Tatranská Lomnica. The Prague Transport Company controller Gustav Anděl also travels to the same destination as a reward. He does not know yet Věra, future wife of his son Mirek, and has decided to secretly check her behaviour in the absence of her fiancée. By mistake he considers Věra Novotná to be his son's girlfriend, and so his investigations cause him plenty of embarrassments. Nevertheless he enjoys his stay in the mountains, because he has met there Bohouš Vyhlídka, whom he has befriended during summer vacation two years ago. Meanwhile in Prague Mrs Andělová helps Věra's mother to exchange flats, so that their children would have a place of their own. During a trip to the Lomnický štít three holidaymakers are stuck in fog in a mountain cabin. So far Gustav Anděl was desperate because of the behaviour of his future daughter-in-law, who embraced Zdeněk all the time, and only there he finally notices he has mistaken her for Věra Matoušková. Now he is content, because this Věra is a perfect match for his son.
