While the Prague songs of Karel Hašler (1879–1941) attained their greatest popularity during the early 20th century, their inherently timeless nature is underscored by this 1967 musical showcase film from director Zdeňek Podskalský. The story sees maiden Veronika (Jiřina Bohdalová) relating the romantic escapades of Malá Strana beauty Stázi (Pavlína Filipovská). Following an unhappy imbroglio with student Tadeáš (Václav Neckář) Stázi has immediately developed an interest in three different men. Subsequently, after an unhappy marriage to a landlord (Josef Beyvl) she ultimately returns to one of her former loves (Josef Zíma). This mosaic-like story is only loosely connected by Hašler’s songs, performed in the film by 29 assorted acting and singing stars of the time. Vít Olmer’s tragicomedy Ta naše písnička česká II (Our Czech Song II, 1990) is entirety unrelated to this film.
Synopsis
The songs of Prague by Karel Hašler, so popular at the end of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th centuries, do not grow old. There are still sung everywhere from pubs to construction sites. They also have their place in the love stories from old Prague, which maiden Veronika can tell so nicely. Their heroine is the maiden Stázi, who first did not have luck in her love with student Tadeáš, but then fell in love with three gentlemen at once - shy Mr Alois, jolly Mr Franc and Mr Johanes who seduced her behind the Horse Gate. Eventually, however, she threw them all over for an old but wealthy landlord. The three abandoned gentlemen almost take their lives under the Stone Bridge. However, their sadness soon stops hurting and they find their feet in marriages richly blessed by cute kids. And maiden Stázi? She ran away from the old man and returned to Mr Franc upon his return from military service. And all that happened in just one old house in the Lesser Town district in Prague, the city to which the composer Hašler declared his love in a song: "That is my beautiful one, the white princess. The only I know in the world. That is my love, that is my dear one which I am never going to leave."
Note
The members of the choir Allanovy sestry (Allan´s Sisters) changed in the course of time; in this film, they are Božena Klocová, Věra Kočvarová and Jiřina Salačová. In the production list, director Martin Frič is mentioned as the co-author of the theme.
