Women in Chudoplesy plait various products of reed for the local factor Moc. Although the man gets rich on the reed, he pays his workers less and less. In the only local store, moreover, Moc's father-in-law steals from the whole village. When the poverty becomes unbearable, the workers obey the well-sinker Havlík and quit working for Moc. Moc withdraws but only until he gathers enough reed products. After that he closes down. Women lose their jobs and income. In the meantime, however, the inhabitants of Chudoplesy - also upon Havlík's advice - apply to open their own grocery store. Before their application is cleared, the shoemaker Pekelský offers all his savings to help the community. The solidarity has its effects. The village is allowed to run its own grocery store, and one Sunday, trucks loaded with food for the store arrive from Turnov. They also bring the reed so that the women have work. The bloodsucker Moc's house is burnt down, even the tower where he had proudly hung the bells of reed.
