Synopsis

Engineer Jiří Novák returns home to Domažlice from America after leaving his lover, the singer Jasmína Dalia. He wants to find a girl from a different environment. After his return he finds himself captivated by his aunt's maid Jarmila. Jarmila lives a modest life and supports her father, a heavy drinker, and her brother, a gambler and good-for-nothing. Jiří marries Jarmila and introduces her into society. Their marriage is very happy although they are frequently visited by Jasmína who tries to take her revenge for the way Jiří had treated her. She seizes her chance in his absence and invites Jarmila to a party and gets her drunk. She then sends the composer Bartoň to accompany Jarmila home and makes sure that Jarmila's companion Mrs Klečínská knows that Jarmila left with a man, informing her that she had fallen in love with him at the party. Klečínská decides to stay the night at Jarmila's. After Bartoň has left the house, Josef, who is being followed by the police, sneaks in and asks Jarmila for help. Klečínská thinks that Bartoň has returned and she tells Jiří everything on his return. After an argument, Jiří leaves Jarmila. Jiří's suspicions are put allayed after a conversation with the policeman who arrested Josef. Jiří hurries home. He returns just in time to save a desperate Jarmila from committing suicide.
