Summary

Unfinished film.

Synopsis

It is summer and a Prague professor of psychiatry, called Jelen, with his wife Anna, children Jarmila, Václav and Ivánek, and maid Cilka, are spending their summer holidays at the professor's home in Lichnov. The teenage siblings Jarmila and Václav have a local student group, including Karel, Josef, Rudolf and Jiří, one-year younger Vlasta, Máša and others, with whom they do sports, go on trips, and prepare a party. However, a haughty young man, Toufar, suddenly bursts into Jarmila's settled world, in which the girl is cautiously discovering her love for her friend Karel. The seducer, who is cheating on his girlfriend Lucie from Hradec, pretends to be a tramp and editor of the magazine Neohroženost with his parents' money. He uses gentleman-like ways to attract Jarmila, which seems to be working, but at the same time it also confuses her. The girl's insecurity is increased by the manifestations of the troubled love of the carousel people Alois and Božka. The gang does not trust Toufar and try to avoid him. Despite his sons' protests, the professor and his wife leave for a scientific congress abroad. Jarmila cannot wait to get them out of her sight. At the same time, she has a feeling that something is about to happen to her parents. Because of her contacts with Toufar, the whole group turns away from the girl. At the Holiday Student Evening, where the teachers and the headmaster are present, the friends intentionally ignore Jarmila, who is accompanied by Mrs Horáková. Therefore, the girl decides to visit Toufar at his cottage, so she goes there the next day. On the way, she hears a radio announcement that there has been an accident on the train in which her parents were travelling. She comes back home in a hurry. The news also heard the gang and Václav with Karel. Suddenly it seems that the devastated children have grown up. Jarmila, reunited with her friends, takes care of her brothers, and prepares for life without her father and mother. Fortunately, in the morning a telegram arrives from her parents, announcing that they are alive and well. In fact, just before the collision, the Jelenovi couple gets off at a bus stop to refresh the memories of their honeymoon. The wise Jarmila returns to the group and to Karel and Lucie also breaks up with Toufar. Karel punches the seducer in the face and the punished man falls into the river. (Based on the original script)

Note

At the end of the summer of 1944, exterior scenes were filmed around the town of Písek. Then the work was to continue in the studios from November 1944 to January 1945. Due to the lack of available studios, work on the film was stopped. The filming was to serve as a rescue for the young actors from the total deployment in the Reich (Totaleinsatz). The footage has not been preserved. In 1947, director Otakar Vávra decided to return to the subject with his own new script.
