Synopsis

In celebrating in a night club the arrival of the new, twentieth century three friends meet, notary Jiří Voborský, clerk Emanuel Střela, and lieutenant Miloslav Jičínský. The Králíček family is also here: Florián the father, Veronika the mother and the two daughters Emma and Julie. When the Králíček's awake in the morning at home, they find an unknown man, Voborský, asleep in the armchair in Emma's room. The father of the family decides that Voborský must marry his daughter Emma. The man does not agree with this until the moment he discovers that this is the girl who he was attracted to at the New Year's party. After the wedding the newlyweds go off to the country. They look forward to being alone there. In the evening, however, Voborský's friends show up. Because they have sworn to not get married, Jiří introduces Emma as his daughter. The situation is complicated further by the arrival of the Králíček family. Střela is convinced that Emma is not Voborský's daughter but his own who he had with Eližběta Vaňousová. Jičínský falls in love with Julie, but Voborský imagines he is interested in Emma. Everything is cleared up when Voborský confesses that he has become married. Then Jičínský asks for Julie's hand and Vaňousová divulges to Střela that she has never had a child with him.

Note

This theme had already been treated in a Czech film under the same title (Dir: Václav Kubásek, 1925).
