Jarka and Věra are children of the ministerial councillor Pšenička. Jarka prefers sport and a variety of mischievous pranks to schoolwork, and therefore he is still at nineteen in the sixth class at school. His sister Věra is an excellent student, and although younger than Jarka she is already attending the seventh class. However, she willingly takes part in all her brother's wild activities. At the end of the school year Jarka has once again failed and the atmosphere at home is tense. The situation worsens upon the arrival of the rich and strict aunt Klára, who decides to take the upbringing of the children into her own hands during their school vacation. At her country estate Jarka will study and Věra will reflect on marriage. Jarka actually diligently studies under the supervision of the family tutor Mařík. According to plan Věra falls in love, but not with the prearranged suitor, the mine owner Jankovec, but with this very Mařík. Thanks to a little trick on the part of the siblings - the faking of Věra's suicide - aunt Klára is convinced of Mařík's qualities and, on the contrary, of Jankovec's cowardice and limitations. Thus she consents to the engagement. Jarka easily passes his exams and advances to the next level.
