Synopsis

The elegant wife of a widely known Prague lawyer, Eva Plužná does not pay too much attention to her young daughter. Spoilt by her husband she flits from one lover to another. Dr. Rybiak, the owner of a sanatorium where Eva is taking treatment, falls in love with her and asks her to leave her husband. Rybiak's wife Hana, also a doctor, discovers their affair and they row violently. Rybiak is arrested in Prague, where he has gone to be with Eva, because his wife is found poisoned by a mysterious poison. Eva's husband meanwhile catches her being unfaithful with a new lover and only the pleas of Eva's father and her little daughter prevent a divorce. In court, the testimonies of Rybiak's assistant and the taxi driver who once drove Eva and Rybiak worsen Rybiak's case. Eva then betrays him by denying their liaison under oath and by claiming he admitted to her that he had murdered his wife. At the last moment Rybiak is saved by a letter which Hana's cousin Jiří Málek brings to the court; it is Hana's letter of farewell to her husband before suicide. Eva, under pain of punishment for perjury, shoots herself in the courtroom.
