It is the year 1911. Student Stáňa Jarský is teaching Jiřinka, the nine-year-old daughter of the elderly industrialist Horník, to play the piano. The young man, however, is in love with the youthful, beautiful Mrs Horníková and his parents decide it would be better to send him off to study in Vienna. On the eve of his departure, Helena Horníková finds herself at home alone and she succumbs to his passionate declaration of love. It is now 1920. Export specialist ing. Stáňa Jarský meets the now adult Jiřinka in Prague. The young couple find themselves falling in love and Jarský plans to ask for her hand in marriage. The widowed Mrs Horníková, however, is concerned for the fate of the factory which she can only save by its merger with a plant owned by Mr Krutina. Jiřinka is forced to marry his son. 1939. The greying and youthfully elegant general director Jarský returns to Bohemia from his travels abroad. He meets Helenka, the daughter of Jiřinka and the granddaughter of his first love. The couple fall in love. On the grandmother's recommendation the family now consent to Jarský's request for Helenka's hand in marriage; after all, he could now be ready to experience another generation.
