Synopsis

Chocolate factory owner Adolf Vilím would like his son Alík to marry the wealthy Nina Štěpánková. But Alík is not interested in Nina or in the chocolate factory. Through his future mother-in-law Štěpánová, a benefactrix, Alík gets to know the beggar Pešta and his step-daughter Zuzka. Alík falls for Zuzka at first sight and makes her his secretary. Zuzka is good at her job and through her Alík starts to take an interest in the factory. Nina is unhappy about this and spreads the rumour that Alík is keeping Zuzka as a mistress. Alík nevertheless gets engaged to Zuzka and with her buys a dairy. Nina still tries to win Alík for herself and invites him out to a club. But she realises she has lost him for good when he pulls out, not a handkerchief, but a child's shirt Zuzka gave him. Alík's father is happy that thanks to Zuzka Alík has learnt to live for himself and to work. He looks forward to becoming a grandfather.
