Synopsis

The banker Jan Kádner, disappointed in his love for the dancer Nina, settles down in a small town. He is very well-off and likes to help the needy. But he does not allow his generosity to be abused, and this causes some of the townsfolk to conceive a dislike for him. Jan falls in love with the mayor's daughter Marta, who requites his feelings. But the mayor is dead set against their relationship - he is against anybody from the city, because it was the sinful city that took his son Vláďa from him. Jan happens to find out that Vláďa has fallen victim to Nina. He tries to rescue him from her clutches but she resists, even inducing Vláďa to steal money from his father's coffer. Jan catches Vláďa in the act of stealing, but Vláďa manages to get away with the money. To prevent a scandal, Jan puts his own money into the mayor's coffer. He is seen doing this and accused of theft. Vláďa however finally recognises Nina's calculating nature and returns home, where he proves Jan's innocence. The mayor realises that Jan saved the family honour and therefore no longer stands in the way of Jan's love of Marta.
