Synopsis

The black gamekeepers were a group of twelve men taken into the service of a prince who lived in a castle in wooded hills. The young men were famed for the dancing skill and there were no better lovers. Every once in a while they would ride down to town on their noble horses, and the town would be considerably more lively for their presence. The prince had forbidden them marriage, and so in their wake they left many a broken heart. The film was to have told the story of the love of an innkeeper's beautiful daughter for Jiří the hunter. (Based on press reports of the time)

The middle of the 19th century. The prince of the mountain forest manor has a group of twelve hunters called Gamekeepers in Black, including hunters Vojtěch, Jan, Antonín, Oldřich, Karel and Rudolf. They are not allowed to get married. Occasionally they come to Dymák's pub in Plavé Hůrky to have fun. In front of the village girls, they show off their skills, such as for example dancing. The oldest hunter, Václav, who has served four years of service and has become a gamekeeper, is replaced by a young man, Jiří. Žofka, a Dymák's daughter, falls in love with young Jiří. The daughter of the keeper of the Princely Court breaks up with Jiří. The violent smith likes Žofka and does not approve of Žofka and Jiří's relationship. The young couple meets up secretly in the forest and in a cabin of Marjána, who sells spices at the market. The smith sets Marjána's cabin to fire out of jealousy. Žofka gets pregnant with Jiří's baby. After the unpleasant event with the smith, whose leg is now paralysed, the hunters cannot go to Plavé Hůrky anymore. The prince allows them to go there in winter. The smith continues to follow Žofka and Jiří when they came to the forest again. Žofka reveals to Jiří, that she is pregnant. The smith starts to fight Jiří and tells Dymák about the young girl's sin. Jiří asks for the blessing from Žofka's father so he can marry her. Jealous Sláva, a daughter of a commander, makes her father to ask for the prince's permission to marry Jiří so that he cannot marry Žofka. Žofka later receives a wedding announcement about their wedding, which sent her Sláva herself. Dymák pushes Žofka into marriage with the smith. At the last minute, Sláva admits to her father that she lied, and Jiří convicts the smith of arson right before Žofka's wedding. Nothing stands in the way of Jiří and Žofka's wedding anymore. (Based on the original script)

Note

Only the exterior scenes were shot, at the end of 1944 (for example fire at the farm). After the liberation, filming, although originally planned, did not continue. This theme has already been treated in a Czech film under the same title (Dir: Václav Binovec, 1921).
